Best Job Finder Sites for Software Engineers in 2026 (Ranked)

July 22, 2026·3 min read

What makes a job finder site actually good

Most rankings of "best job boards" are just lists of the most popular ones. Popular doesn't mean useful. The criteria that actually matter for a software engineer:

  • Listing freshness — are roles posted in the last 7 days, or is the board full of 3-month-old ghost listings?
  • Role quality — real companies with real open positions, not staffing agency spam
  • Relevance filters — can you actually narrow to your stack, seniority, and location preference?
  • Competition level — fewer applicants per role means your application has a higher chance of being read
  • Fit visibility — can you see how well you match before applying?

Tier 1: Highest signal, lowest noise

1. Applyr Jobs Board — applyr.in/jobs

Best for: Engineers targeting top-tier tech companies who want to check their fit before applying.

Applyr aggregates live openings from 67 curated tech companies — Anthropic, ElevenLabs, Vercel, Mistral, Linear, Figma, Notion, Stripe, and more — updated in real time. What makes it different from every other job board: every listing can be scored against your resume in one click. You see your ATS match percentage before deciding to apply. No other job finder does this.

Competition level: Low — most candidates don't know about the board yet.
Listing freshness: Real-time, pulled directly from company career pages.
Role type: Product companies, Series B to public, mostly engineering.

2. Hacker News "Who's Hiring"

Best for: Engineers who want early-stage startup roles before they're posted anywhere else.

Posted on the first of every month at news.ycombinator.com. Founders and hiring managers post directly — no recruiter intermediary, no duplicate listings, no ghost roles. Use Ctrl+F to search for your stack. Many roles here are remote-first and never appear on any aggregator.

Competition level: Very low — underused by most job seekers.
Listing freshness: New thread every month, posts are almost always live.
Role type: Startups, early to Series B, high technical bar.

3. Company career pages (direct)

Best for: Engineers with 10–20 specific target companies.

The most reliable signal that a role is genuinely open: it's on the company's own careers page. Set up a browser bookmark folder with your target companies' careers URLs and check weekly. First-mover advantage is real — ATS systems weight recency, and early applicants often get reviewed before recruiters set volume filters.

Tier 2: High volume, useful with the right filters

4. LinkedIn Jobs

Best for: Mid-to-large company roles, roles where recruiter outreach matters.

The largest job board by volume — but also the noisiest. Make it useful: set "Date Posted: Past week," turn off Easy Apply (more competition), and set up email alerts so you don't browse daily. LinkedIn's advantage is breadth and the fact that recruiters actively use it for outreach.

Competition level: High — 200–500 applicants on popular roles is common.
Listing freshness: Mixed — filter aggressively by date.

5. Wellfound (formerly AngelList Talent)

Best for: Startup roles, equity-focused candidates, Series A–C companies.

Wellfound shows compensation ranges and equity upfront on every listing — rare and valuable. Listings skew toward funded startups. The application volume is meaningfully lower than LinkedIn for equivalent roles.

Competition level: Medium — smaller audience than LinkedIn.
Listing freshness: Generally good, actively maintained by companies.

6. Glassdoor

Best for: Researching companies alongside their job listings.

Glassdoor's value isn't the job board — it's the salary data and company reviews alongside listings. Use it to validate whether a company is worth applying to after finding a role elsewhere. As a primary job finder: lower listing quality than LinkedIn, but useful for mid-market and enterprise companies.

Tier 3: Niche and supplementary

7. Remote.co / We Work Remotely

Focused entirely on remote roles. Useful if remote is a hard requirement and you want to browse listings that have explicitly committed to distributed teams.

8. levels.fyi Jobs

Small job board but attached to the most accurate compensation data for tech roles. Useful for senior engineers targeting large tech companies where TC visibility matters.

9. X (Twitter) #hiring

Underrated. Founders and technical hiring managers at startups post roles directly on X before anywhere else. Follow people at your target companies and search "[company name] hiring [role]."

The one thing all of these have in common

Finding the listing is the easy part. The bottleneck is whether your resume passes the ATS filter once you apply. Before you submit to anything, run your resume and the job description through Applyr's free ATS checker. If you're below 70% match, a 10-minute resume edit will do more for your callback rate than applying to 30 more jobs.
